Lease sale proceeds crash on weak economy
The $703 million companies doled out for exploration tracts in Central Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 208 was certainly no barnburner when compared to last year’s $3.7 billion and the prior year’s $2.8 billion extravaganzas. (Posted: 03-23-09)

U.S. shale gas contributing to price collapse
It’s no mystery that increasing supply of natural gas in the U.S Lower 48 has contributed to a serious erosion in gas prices. Less obvious is that major technological advancements in tools that better extract gas from the numerous shale deposits in the United States, which are easy to find but can be difficult to produce from, have contributed to the price deterioration. Ike, Gustav take big bite from GoM production
Back-to-back hurricanes Gustav and now Ike, as it churns through the Gulf of Mexico, have taken the lion’s share of U.S. Gulf oil and natural gas production out of circulation, causing a major supply disruption and forcing some producers to request emergency loans from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), evidently to keep their Gulf Coast oil refineries running. Western Gulf Lease Sale 207 draws $487M in high bids
